Alfa Romeo History

At  Corwin Alfa Romeo of Springfield, we think it's important to know the history of our brand.  AlfaRomeo was founded in 1910 and got its start in car racing the following year. Since then, the Italian brand has become a status symbol thanks to its premium styling and powerful engines. The brand is named after the company's original initials "A.L.F.A" and the man, Nicola Romeo, who took control in 1915.

The Alfa Romeo brand saw its first production model roll off the line in 1910. Giuseppe Merosi, who would go on to take the brand to new heights, designed the A.L.F.A 24 HP. Merosi put his efforts into designing powerful engines, a factor that put the brand near the front of the pack in car racing.

In 1914, the GP1914 carried a four-cylinder engine with twin ignition and double overhead camshafts. Needless to say, it was a powerhouse all on its own.

During World War I, Nicola Romeo took control and began producing aircraft engines and various other mechanical parts for the war effort. After the war, Romeo expanded the brand by investing in production facilities throughout Italy.

In 1920, the company name was officially changed to Alfa Romeo. The Torpedo 20-30HP became the first model to wear the badge with pride. That same year, the Alfa Romeo brand took first place at Mugello with Giuseppe Campari behind the wheel. An Alfa Romeo model driven by none other than Enzo Ferrari took second place at Targa Florio.

Alfa Romeo continued its racing success by winning the 1925 World Championship Grand Prix. Over the next few years, engineers focused on create powerful engines based on the winning P2 Grand Prix car.

Italy saw much strife during World War II, and Alfa Romeo couldn't escape the destruction. A major factory was destroyed. Following the war, many drivers turned to mass-produced models, turning away from the Alfa Romeo luxury lineup.

Alfa Romeo weathered the tough years and came out stronger than ever. The Italian brand made its way to North America in 2014 with a sports car that outpaced many competitors. Two new models are making their way to the road this year, and Corwin Alfa Romeo FIAT will have them ready for test drives now that they have finally arrived.
